Finding Peace in the Chaos: A Missouri Woman’s Guide to Nervous System Regulation
As a woman who "carries it all," you’re likely familiar with the feeling of having 100 tabs open in your brain.
You’re showing up for your kids, managing a career, and pouring into your community—but inside, you feel like you’re vibrating at a frequency of "overwhelmed".
Many women I see for online Christian counseling in Missouri describe this as feeling "spiritually dry" or constantly on edge. If you’ve found yourself snapping at your spouse or feeling a sense of panic when your to-do list grows, you aren't "failing" at your faith or your motherhood. Often, what we label as a lack of peace is actually a physiological state: a dysregulated nervous system.
What is Nervous System Regulation?
In the world of brain science, your nervous system is your body’s internal security guard. When you are under constant stress—whether from high-functioning anxiety or the daily "mental gymnastics" of motherhood—that guard stays on "High Alert" (the Sympathetic state).
When you're stuck in this state, your body believes it is under attack, even if you’re just sitting in the school pickup line in Ozark or Springfield.
Signs your nervous system needs regulation:
You feel "wired but tired".
Tiny inconveniences feel like major catastrophes.
You struggle to feel God’s presence despite praying.
Physical symptoms: heart palpitations, tight shoulders, or a "tightness" in your chest.
The Intersection of Faith and Neuroscience
At Prosper Counseling, we believe science is not at odds with our faith; rather, science provides evidence that confirms the way God designed us. A perfect creator made a beautiful, complex creation—you.
In 3 John 1:2, we are told: “Beloved, I pray that you may prosper in all things and be in health, just as your soul prospers.”
Prospering in your soul includes caring for the physical "temple" that houses it. When we use nervous system regulation tools, we aren't replacing prayer; we are clearing the "physiological noise" so we can actually hear the "still small voice" of the Holy Spirit.
Why We Put Off Therapy (And the Truth Instead)
If you’ve been delaying reaching out for support, you aren't alone. High-capacity women often wait until they hit a "Dark Forest" of burnout before seeking help. Here are a few reasons we delay, and why the time is actually now:
"I should be able to pray this away." While prayer is powerful, God also provided trained professionals and evidence-based tools (like EMDR therapy) to help us heal.
"I don't have time." We often think we don't have space for self-care, but telehealth counseling allows you to fit healing into your busy Missouri life—between meetings or during nap time.
"It’s not that bad." You don't have to wait for a crisis to deserve peace. Asking for help is the bravest thing you can do.
3 Helpful Tips to Settle Your System Today
You don't have to solve the whole problem today, but you can start to "push forward" toward peace.
The "Exhale" Prayer: Science shows that a long exhale triggers the Vagus nerve to calm the heart. Try breathing in for 4 seconds and exhaling for 8 while whispering: "He leads me beside quiet waters."
Acknowledge, Validate, Permission (A.V.P.): When you feel your inner critic rising, stop and Acknowledge the feeling. Validate that it makes sense to feel stressed. Permit yourself to feel that emotion without judgment. You can learn more about this strategy and others in my book.
The Wellness Wheel: Look at your life in five domains: spiritual, emotional, mental, physical, and social. Instead of trying to fix everything, pick one area to focus on this week. Use the feelings wheel to get to the root of what is creating big emotions.
