Breaking the Stigma: How "Mama's Got Anxiety" Advocates for Mental Health Support in Christian Communities
I recently had the privilege to receive a copy of the book, “Mama’s Got Anxiety: But It’s Not Going to Steal Her Joy,” by Courtney Devich. The book was written directly to mothers who struggle with anxiety and/or depression. It parallels beautifully with the heartbeat and passion of Prosper Counseling, which is integrating our faith with psychology for our mental health and well-being. Both faith and psychology can co-exist and work together!
Courtney’s book not only encourages mothers dealing with anxiety but also advocates for the importance of seeking professional mental health help and utilizing medication when necessary. Devich’s faith-based approach helps break the stigma surrounding mental health within Christian communities, offering hope and practical advice for those struggling.
For many mothers, anxiety can become a constant companion, making it difficult to fully enjoy the precious moments with their children. Anxiety can also develop in postpartum recovery and create added stressors to adjusting to the new role and life transition as a mother. In Mama's Got Anxiety, Devich shares her personal experiences with anxiety, offering readers a relatable and compassionate voice. She acknowledges the unique challenges that mothers face while managing anxiety while embracing the joys of motherhood.
It’s important to note anxiety takes on many different forms including Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD), Postpartum Mood or Anxiety Disorder (PMADs), Social Anxiety, Separation Anxiety, specific phobias, among other forms of anxiety. Seeking out a trained mental health professional can help one learn and understand how to manage specific symptoms and needs with evidence-based tools that fit a Christian worldview. The Importance of Professional Mental Health Support
One of the most significant messages in Devich’s book is the importance of seeking professional help for mental health issues. She emphasizes that anxiety is not a sign of weak faith or a lack of trust in God. Instead, she encourages readers to view mental health support as a valuable resource that God has provided. By sharing her own journey of seeking therapy and using medication, Devich helps to normalize these options for other mothers who may be hesitant to take that step.
Biblical Encouragement and Practical Strategies
Throughout Mama's Got Anxiety, Devich weaves biblical encouragement with practical strategies for managing anxiety. Devich reminds readers that they are not alone in their struggles and that it is possible to find joy and peace even in the midst of anxiety. By sharing her own story and offering practical advice, she empowers mothers to take control of their mental health and embrace the support available to them.
